Community Involvement: Volunteer to read for Community Reading Day |
Wednesday, 6 July 2011 12:00 |
What better way to celebrate Dr. Seuss' s birthday than reading to a child? Pamela W. Carter volunteered to read to a class of Isidore Newman kindergarten children. National Education Association Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading during the months of February - April. Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school. When we celebrate reading we send a clear message to children that reading is fun and important.

Solace: Help War Veterans with Disabilities |
Wednesday, 20 October 2010 09:40 |
We've all seen the horrible pictures of our heroes returning home from war physically and mentally mangled in the line of duty. Many leave for duty healthy and whole, and only to return mentally damaged and with severe injuries that plague them and their families for the rest of their lives.
Consider honoring our troops by supporting groups for veterans with disabilities. There are more than 21,000 soldiers who have been wounded in action to date in Iraq and Afghanistan. These men and women will return home as veterans with disabilities. Freedom comes with a price that they have paid with their minds, bodies and souls. Help give back to the men and women of our military who have so selfishly given of themselves. Here's how YOU can help. Contact, volunteer or make a monetary donation to one of these organizations that are working to help our war veterans:
Disable American Veterans, (895) 441-7300 or www.dav.org
Blinded American Veterans Foundation, (202) 462-4430 or www.bavf.org
Blinded American Association, (718) 803-3782 or www.bva.org
